Why Orthopaedic Surgery?

I was raised in a home where restoration was a way of life — from fixing machines with my engineer father in the garage to developing motor skills through play in my mother’s home occupational therapy practice. I was taught discipline and resilience through a variety of sports at provincial and national level, but it was a fractured scaphoid and a hand surgeon’s passion that revealed my calling: Orthopaedic Surgery. For me, it’s not just about bones — it’s about restoring movement, dignity, and independence. I still remember the registrar who told me, “It’s a really tough road to Orthopaedic Surgery, but it’s so worth it… I guess you just need to decide how bad you want it.” Every time I’m tested, my answer is the same: I want it really, really bad. This isn’t just a career — it’s the natural extension of everything I’ve ever loved.

Skills and Experience

While my formal theatre exposure during internship and Community Service was limited, I made every moment count — taking full responsibility for orthopaedic patients in casualty, mastering key procedures, and earning the trust of seniors who saw in me “the love, the brain, and the hands” for surgery. With a foundation in Basic Surgical Skills, ATLS, and FCS (SA) Primaries, and hands-on experience across orthopaedics, general surgery, and obstetrics, I’ve built a reputation for calm precision, rapid learning, and good pro-active surgical instinct.

Why Choose me as assistant

Assisting in theatre, to me, is a responsibility that extends far beyond holding a retractor. It is about supporting the surgeon, the team, and the patient — before the first incision is made, throughout the procedure, and into the post-operative phase. I approach each case with the mindset of service: helping with pre-operative preparation, assisting with anaesthetic support and pre-medication, and ensuring that the theatre environment runs smoothly and efficiently.

In theatre, I maintain a calm and professional presence, attuned to the rhythm of the team and the nuances of the surgeon’s technique. I strive to anticipate needs — whether it’s positioning, instrumentation, or timing — and to communicate clearly and respectfully with everyone involved. My goal is always to contribute not just to technical success, but to the overall morale and flow of the surgical experience.

What sets me apart as an assistant is a combination of spatial awareness, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. I think in three dimensions and acquire new skills quickly. I remain composed under pressure, take feedback constructively, and never allow ego to interfere with performance. I am punctual, presentable, and professional, and I bring a focused yet light-hearted energy to the room. I make it a priority to understand each surgeon’s preferences and style, and to integrate seamlessly into their workflow.

I observe first, integrate fast, and aim to be the kind of assistant who makes the surgeon’s job easier — not only technically, but emotionally and logistically. Because when the team functions at its best, the patient receives the best possible care. That is the standard I hold myself to, every time I step into theatre.

Goals & Vision

My journey into medicine — and orthopaedic surgery in particular — has always been about more than a career. It’s about restoring what matters most: movement, independence, and dignity. I believe that when we help someone walk again, lift their child, return to work, or simply live without pain, we’re not just treating a body — we’re restoring a life.

My short-term goal is to continue building my surgical skillset through hands-on experience, mentorship, and ongoing study. I want to be in theatre as often as possible, learning from those who’ve walked this road before me, and contributing meaningfully to every case I assist on. I’m committed to showing up with professionalism, humility, and a hunger to grow — because I know that excellence in surgery is earned one case, one lesson, one patient at a time.

Long-term, I see myself becoming a surgeon who blends technical mastery with deep empathy — someone who not only operates with precision, but who listens, teaches, and leads with integrity. I want to be part of a generation of orthopaedic surgeons who value the craft as much as the science, and who never lose sight of the human being beneath the skin and bone.

Ultimately, my vision is simple: to be a restorer. Of movement. Of confidence. Of quality of life. That’s the work I believe in. And that’s the path I’m walking — one step at a time.
